Julian Dunkerton is a British businessman best known as the co-founder of Superdry, the fashion brand that grew from a small UK retail operation into an internationally recognized name. His retail story began with Cult Clothing, founded in Cheltenham in 1985, before he co-founded Superdry in 2003 as a new in-house clothing brand. Superdry quickly developed a distinctive identity combining vintage American influences, Japanese-inspired graphics and casual fashion. The business expanded through stores, wholesale partnerships and international licensing, and in 2010 Dunkerton led its flotation on the London Stock Exchange at an initial valuation of about £400 million. By 2018, Superdry products were being sold across 157 countries through stores, websites, franchises, licenses and concessions.
What makes Dunkerton’s story more unusual than a straightforward founder success story is what happened after Superdry became a major public company. He stepped away from the chief executive role as the business changed leadership and ultimately left the company in March 2018 to focus on other interests. His separation from Superdry was short-lived. Concerned about the company’s direction and performance, Dunkerton pushed for a return to its board. At an extraordinary general meeting on 2 April 2019, shareholders backed his appointment by a narrow 51.15% majority. The vote triggered major leadership changes, and Dunkerton became interim chief executive immediately afterward. Superdry said his return was intended to restore greater attention to the product, design and quality that had helped establish the brand. He was later appointed permanent CEO in December 2020.
His second period at Superdry has been dominated by a difficult retail environment and an attempt to reshape the company for a smaller, more sustainable future. In 2024, Superdry launched a major restructuring program as it faced financial pressure, with the plan later receiving court approval. The process included fundraising and plans to leave the London Stock Exchange. More recently, the business has increasingly used the Superdry & Co identity, while Dunkerton remains listed by the company as its Chief Executive Officer. Superdry’s FY25 sustainability report also identifies him as Founder & Chief Executive Officer, showing that more than two decades after creating the brand, he remains directly involved in determining its direction. His career therefore stands out not only for building an international fashion label, but for returning to a company he founded and attempting to rebuild it after one of the most turbulent periods in its history.
