Anne Boden: The Remarkable Story Behind the Founder of Starling Bank

Anne Boden is a Welsh banker and technology entrepreneur best known for founding Starling Bank in 2014, helping make app-based banking a serious alternative to Britain’s traditional high-street banks. Before launching the business, she spent more than three decades in financial services, gaining experience at established banking institutions. She believed that simply adding mobile apps to outdated banking systems would not solve the industry’s underlying problems. Instead, she wanted to build a fully regulated bank around modern technology from the start. Starling received its UK banking license in 2016 and launched its first mobile personal current account in 2017, later expanding into business banking and financial technology services. Her achievement stood out because she combined extensive banking experience with the ambition to build an entirely new financial institution. Recognized as the first woman to found a British bank, Boden became an important figure in the development of the UK’s digital banking sector.

Born and raised in Swansea, Wales, Anne Boden grew up in a working-class household, with a father employed as a steelworker and a mother who worked in a department store. She graduated from Swansea University in 1981 with a degree in Computer Science and Chemistry and later earned an MBA from Middlesex University. She began her career at Lloyds Bank before moving into senior roles at major financial institutions, including ABN AMRO and the Royal Bank of Scotland. She gained extensive experience in transaction banking, technology, and international financial operations. In 2012, she became chief operating officer at Allied Irish Banks, which was rebuilding following the financial crisis. These experiences helped shape her approach to launching Starling. Establishing the business meant securing investment, obtaining regulatory approval, and assembling a technology-focused team. Under her leadership, the bank introduced digital money-management features, including spending insights and card controls. Its technology subsidiary, Engine by Starling, also developed banking software for other financial institutions. In 2018, Boden received an MBE for services to financial technology, recognizing her contribution to the industry.

Boden’s business journey also included significant changes and difficult decisions. During Starling’s early development, Tom Blomfield left the company and later helped establish Monzo, another prominent British digital bank. In June 2023, Boden stepped down as Starling’s chief executive, with John Mountain temporarily taking over the position. Raman Bhatia was subsequently appointed Group CEO in 2024. Boden also resigned from Starling’s board in June 2024, ending her decade as a director. Her professional interests have since extended beyond banking into entrepreneurship, writing and artificial intelligence. She authored Banking on It, which explores her experience building Starling, and Female Founders’ Playbook, published in 2024, which examines the challenges facing women building high-growth businesses. Her personal website also positions AI by Boden as a platform for exploring technology’s broader possibilities. What makes her career unusual is that she founded her most recognized business after decades of experience in the industry she wanted to transform.
