Tom Blomfield: The Entrepreneur Behind Monzo, GoCardless and a New AI Career

Tom Blomfield is a British entrepreneur, technology executive, and investor best known for co-founding Monzo, one of the UK’s most recognizable digital banks, and GoCardless, a financial technology company specializing in recurring payments. Born Thomas Benjamin Blomfield, he became a prominent figure in Britain’s fintech industry by helping develop financial services designed around simpler digital experiences. His career drew attention because he helped build two businesses valued at more than $1 billion, as noted in his Y Combinator profile. Rather than spending his entire career leading established companies, he repeatedly moved towards new challenges. After leaving Monzo in 2021, he began investing in and mentoring startups. His professional journey took another unexpected turn in July 2026, when he announced he was taking leave from Y Combinator to join artificial intelligence company Anthropic. The move brought renewed attention to a founder already closely associated with Britain’s changing banking industry.

Blomfield studied law at the University of Oxford, although his professional interests eventually led him towards technology and entrepreneurship. His early business experience included Boso.com, a student-focused online marketplace he developed while at university. He subsequently worked in management consulting before co-founding GoCardless in 2011 alongside Hiroki Takeuchi and Matt Robinson. The company developed technology that lets businesses collect payments through bank-based systems, including Direct Debit. After leaving GoCardless, Blomfield worked as chief technology officer at Starling Bank before helping establish Monzo in 2015. The digital bank became known for its mobile-first approach, distinctive payment cards and features intended to make everyday money management easier. Under his leadership, Monzo expanded from a small startup into a business serving millions of customers. He stepped down as chief executive in 2020, became president, and left in early 2021. He received an OBE in 2019 for his contributions to banking competition and financial inclusion, a key achievement in his entrepreneurial career.

After leaving Monzo, Blomfield shifted his focus to emerging technology companies through Y Combinator, the influential startup accelerator that had previously supported GoCardless. He joined as a visiting partner in 2021 and later became a general partner, advising founders on building products, finding customers, and developing sustainable businesses. In July 2026, he announced a leave of absence from the organization to join Anthropic’s compute team as a member of technical staff, working alongside Anthropic co-founder Tom Brown. The role focuses on computing resources, a critical requirement for training and operating increasingly advanced artificial intelligence systems. His decision was notable because it marked a shift from senior startup leadership to a more hands-on technical role. From launching payment services to building a consumer bank and supporting early-stage founders, Blomfield’s career illustrates several major developments in modern technology. His latest move places him within the expanding AI infrastructure industry, adding a new chapter to a career previously defined by financial technology
