Piers Linney MBE is a British entrepreneur, investor, and former television “Dragon” whose career spans law, investment banking, technology, and business building. He is best known to a wider audience for appearing as an investor on BBC’s Dragons’ Den from 2013 to 2015, as well as for taking part in Channel 4’s The Secret Millionaire. Born in Stoke-on-Trent and raised in a Lancashire mill town, Linney showed an early interest in business. At 13, he started a newspaper-delivery venture by buying directly from a wholesaler when the local newsagent did not deliver on Sundays. That detail helps explain why searches for Piers Linney often move beyond television fame into questions about his business background and entrepreneurial career.
Linney studied accounting and law at the University of Manchester, qualified as a solicitor with City law firm SJ Berwin, and later moved into mergers and acquisitions at Barclays de Zoete Wedd before its acquisition by Credit Suisse. He left investment banking in 2000 to build technology-led businesses and later worked across venture capital, corporate finance, technology, media and communications. On Dragons’ Den, one of his best-known investments was in personalized children’s publisher Wonderbly, which was later sold to private equity. He has also held public-interest roles, including serving as a non-executive director of the British Business Bank and as a trustee of Nesta, giving him experience across entrepreneurship, investment and institutional business support.
More recently, Linney has focused heavily on technology and artificial intelligence. He co-founded Atherton Bikes in 2018 and Implement AI in 2023, where his work has centered on helping organizations adopt AI technology. His public profile now combines entrepreneurship with commentary on AI, small business, finance, diversity and social mobility. In the 2026 New Year Honors, he was appointed MBE for services to small business, entrepreneurs, investors, banking, and diversity and social mobility. That mix of television recognition, finance experience, company building, and current AI work makes Piers Linney a notable figure in modern British business, not simply a former Dragons’ Den personality.
