Rob Law MBE is a British product designer and entrepreneur best known for creating Trunki, the colorful ride-on suitcase that turned children’s luggage into a recognizable consumer category. His story is frequently searched because it combines product design, a famous Dragons’ Den setback and a business that later reached an international market. Law graduated from Northumbria University with a BA (Hons) in Design for Industry in 2000, and the Trunki concept grew out of his design training. When he appeared on BBC’s Dragons’ Den in 2006, he left without investment, but the television rejection became only one chapter in the company’s development.
Law built the business through Magmatic, expanding Trunki from a single ride-on case into a wider children’s travel brand. His current biography says more than five million Trunki suitcases were sold during his 18 years building the brand. He received an MBE for services to business at Windsor Castle in 2011. His career also included the difficult side of product entrepreneurship: Trunki became involved in a major design-rights dispute over a competing children’s suitcase. This case ultimately reached the UK Supreme Court. In 2023, e-commerce company Heroes acquired Trunki, and Law exited Magmatic after more than 16 years of building the company.
The entrepreneur’s story is also closely connected with resilience outside business. Law has publicly discussed living with cystic fibrosis and later wrote the autobiography 65 Roses and a Trunki: Defying the Odds in Life and Business. Rather than retiring after the Trunki sale, he moved into new ventures. His current projects include Zeepy, a children’s sleep business co-founded with his brother Dave Law, and Aphelion Agency, which works with brands selling through Amazon. Companies House records Rob Law and David Law as people with significant control of Zeepy. That shift—from designing a student product idea to selling a global brand, then starting again with new companies—helps explain Rob Law’s continued relevance in British entrepreneurship.
