Sarah Willingham: From Dragons’ Den to Building Major Hospitality Brands

Sarah Willingham is a British entrepreneur, investor and television personality whose career has been built largely around hospitality, consumer businesses and brand growth. She is widely recognized from BBC Two’s Dragons’ Den, where she joined Peter Jones, Deborah Meaden, Touker Suleyman and Nick Jenkins for Series 13 and 14. Still, her business record was already well established before she entered the Den. Willingham grew up in Stoke-on-Trent and developed an early interest in restaurants and consumer brands. After studying business in the UK and France, she worked with Planet Hollywood and PizzaExpress, including on international expansion. Her public profile today combines hospitality leadership, investment and media work, making her notable far beyond her former role as a television Dragon.

One of the defining moves in Willingham’s career came when she left the corporate route and acquired the Bombay Bicycle Club restaurant business. Her official biography says she expanded the brand into what became the UK’s largest Indian restaurant chain. At the same time, her wider work also included involvement with The Real Greek and Tootsies through Clapham House Group. Around the same time, she and her husband, entrepreneur Michael Willingham-Toxvaerd, helped build NeutraHealth, which became a publicly listed business. Television added another strand to her career: from 2006 to 2008, she appeared alongside Raymond Blanc on The Restaurant as a judge and investor. That program also led to her involvement with the London Cocktail Club. Her investment portfolio has since included businesses such as Craft Gin Club and Tonkotsu, demonstrating a consistent focus on consumer and hospitality concepts.

Willingham’s later career brought her back to hospitality at scale. In 2021, she launched and listed Nightcap alongside Michael Willingham-Toxvaerd, with the company established to acquire and develop drinks-led businesses. Nightcap’s current corporate profile identifies Sarah Willingham-Toxvaerd as founder and CEO, and notes that she chairs the Tonkotsu restaurant group and is a shareholder in Craft Gin Club. Away from boardrooms, she has built a reputation as a consumer expert, appearing across British television and media to discuss money, business and consumer issues. Her official biography also notes that she is a mother of four and was named among The Sunday Times’ 500 Most Influential People in Britain in 2016, and that she received honorary doctorates from Staffordshire, Oxford Brookes and Cranfield. Her story stands out because television celebrity followed business success rather than creating it: Willingham had already spent years operating, expanding and investing in companies before becoming a familiar face on Dragons’ Den.
